Who can audition for the Midnight Ramblers?
You must be male (of course!) and a current undergraduate student at the University of Rochester.
How often do you hold auditions for the Ramblers?
We hold auditions at the beginning of every fall and spring semester. You won't be able to miss the flyers around campus! If you auditioned for the Ramblers before and didn’t make it, we encourage you to try out again.
How do I sign up for an audition?
There will be fliers around campus that will let you know where the sign-up sheet is for auditions. There is also an A Cappella Interest Meeting that takes place during freshman orientation each fall. You’ll get a chance to learn about the different a cappella groups at U of R, hear them sing, and get first crack at signing up for auditions.
Do I need any singing experience?
While prior experience like singing in a choir or a cappella group is very valuable, it’s not required. In fact, you don’t even need to know how to read music!
What is the audition process?
When you arrive at your audition, we'll warm you up vocally, and ask that you sing your prepared short solo. Pick something that you're comfortable with and best shows off your voice. Of course, you probably won’t want to sing an Italian aria because that’s just not the kind of singing we do. You get the idea. We might do a few other exercises with you at the audition. It’s very relaxed, and the whole process only takes a few minutes. Don’t worry, it’s pretty painless.
How many guys do you take each year/semester?
We have no quota to fill so there's no telling how many guys we'll take. We simply look for the best voices that fit the group.
If I didn’t get in this time, can I try out again?
Of course! We hope you do. There have been many Ramblers over the years who didn’t get in at their first audition.
What if I have more questions about auditions?
Feel free to contact either the musical director, Nick (director@midnightramblers.org) or assistant musical director, Mike (asstdirector@midnightramblers.org) with any questions we haven't answered here.
